The Skincare Power Duo You Didn’t Know You Needed

on

We’ve all been there—we were excited to get our hands on the latest serum that everyone was raving about, only for our face to look worse a few days later, upon regular use. Sometimes it’s just our skin type not being a fit for the ingredients we bought. But most of the time, it’s the skincare products we use that don’t work well together!

To avoid the costly mistake of buying skincare products that don’t have proper synergy, it’s always best to look into the ingredients and see if they could build on (or ruin) each other’s effects and benefits.

Two skincare ingredients that work well together are lactic acid and ceramides. In this article, we’ll look into why these ingredients work well together, and how to incorporate them into your skincare routine for optimal results.

Can You Use Lactic Acid With Ceramides?

Yes, you may definitely use products with lactic acid simultaneously with products with ceramides. Lactic acid has antimicrobial effects and can act as a gentle chemical exfoliant that can work on the skin’s surface to remove dead skin cells and act as a substrate to produce ceramide on the skin cells.

In other words, lactic acid can increase the ceramide levels on the skin, and further supplying the skin with ceramide can further boost skin resilience due to an enhanced skin barrier.

Aside from exfoliation and barrier protection, lactic acid and ceramides are also great ingredients for those looking for a smoother, more hydrated skin. Lactic acid and ceramides have hydrating and humectant properties, drawing in moisture and locking it in as well for optimal benefits.

Tips on Maximizing the Benefits of Lactic Acid and Ceramides in Your Skincare Routine

The effectiveness of your skincare routine doesn’t only rely on using products with ingredients with good synergy. It also relies on proper techniques when applying these products. Here are some tips you may keep in mind to ensure optimal results from the use of products with lactic acid and ceramides:

  • Do a Patch Test First

Lactic acid and ceramides can cause minimal side effects that can easily go away on their own, including redness or stinging. Ceramides may also even act as a buffer to soothe the redness or stinging from lactic acid.

Still, as with any new product to add in your regimen, it’s best to do a 24-hour patch test first before applying these products on your skin or all over your body, to check if you tolerate them well and don’t show allergic reactions from use. Test out the product first behind the ear or on your inner forearm.

  • Start Small

Start with a lesser concentration of the products, applied less frequently. This is to avoid overwhelming your skin and allowing it to gradually build tolerance to the products. For lactic acid, we advise you to start with 5% concentration first, applied 1 to 2 times weekly, and only increasing once you feel more comfortable with its use.

  • Be Mindful of the Way You Layer Your Products

Lactic acid usually comes as an ingredient of toners and serums, while ceramides are the usual ingredients of moisturizers.

Apply your toner or serum containing lactic acid first, then wait for 15 to 30 minutes for the product to fully be absorbed by the skin, before applying your moisturizer containing ceramides. Doing so can help bring out the best conditions of your skin (e.g., optimal pH conditions) for maximum synergy.
